Explore churches and chapels
Malta is known for its many churches and Gozo is no different. Gozo’s religious traditions are still very strong and are part and parcel of Gozo’s culture, with most of the island’s villages still centred around their church.
The beauty of Gozo’s churches are their variety. You’ll likely come across more than a few on any Gozo holiday. Some are quaint little chapels, like Saint Anne at Dwejra and the gothic style Our Lady of Lourdes that overlooks Mġarr Harbour, whilst others will likely impress with their imposing architecture and intricate interiors.
These include the Xewkija church, with its imposing dome, the Għajnsielem church, with its rocket-shaped belfry and St George’s Basilica in Victoria, with its imposing and very rich interior decor - a must visit whether you are a believer or not!
And finally, a must visit is the Ta’ Pinu National Shrine and Sanctuary, an architectural gem, and a place of devotion and pilgrimage. At this place, it is said that the Blessed Mary spoke to a local - Karmni Grima in the late 19th century.
